Segment Types, Attributes, and Timeframe Definitions

As of July 15, 2025, we’ve changed the way we talk about the people who interact with your brand with some updated terminology:

  • Guest: Someone who’s placed an online order or signed up for marketing emails, but hasn’t joined your loyalty program.
  • Member: Someone who’s officially part of your loyalty program. You will see these changes reflected in the naming and descriptions of some segment types.

Segments allow you to identify, group, and reach your guests, both members and non-members, based on their demographic, behavioral characteristics, actions, or engagement methods. Segments are dynamic by default, meaning they automatically update in real-time as members' data changes. This includes actions such as check-ins/visits, sign-ups, loyalty updates, and reward activities. To keep segments from ever changing, admins are required to freeze the segment at the time of creation or any time they deem appropriate.
If you experience any issues with segment processing or updating, contact the Punchh Support Team via the Support Portal.

Note: There is a limit of 40 total rules when creating a single segment.

See below for a breakdown of all available segment types and their attributes. For more information on creating a new segment using these types, refer to Segments.

Segment Types and Attributes

Member Information

Profile Details

This segment type is configured to filter members based on their User Type and member attributes. A member's user type is denoted by one or more blue tags located below their name in their member profile, such as "Loyalty" or "eClub". You may further filter the segment by additional user attributes such as age, gender, loyalty migration status, and more.

Below are the associated attributes available under this segment type:

Attribute Definition
Demographic
Birthday Filter members based on their own or their relations' (children/spouse's) birthdays.
Note: To segment based on children/spouse birthdays, the member must input their relation and birthday details into their profile. This feature is tailored to your brand and your specific mobile framework setup. If you do not have member relations enabled as part of member profiles in your app experience, an app update is required to utilize this feature.
Age Filters for members based on their Age. You can specify a single value or a range. Age is calculated based on the birthdate provided during the signup process. If not required or updated, you may find this information is inaccurate for your members.
Age Verification Status Filter for all the age-verified members in your loyalty program when the value is set to ‘True.' When the value is set to ‘False’, you can filter for members who have not completed or verified their age. This attribute helps reach the right members for age-appropriate campaigns and reach new members to get their age verified for new offers/rewards.
Note: This attribute is available for brands with an age-verification integration in place. Contact your Punchh representative with questions.
Gender Filters for members based on their self-identified Gender, if collected.
Geographic
Favorite Location Filters for members based on their selected Favorite Location. Multiple locations or location groups can be selected to include. Individual members only have one favorite location. Disabled locations are still included in segmentation.
Note: Members cannot select multiple locations as a favorite. When you select attribute value = ANY, it filters for members who have selected a favorite location. Null = For no location selected.
Last Visited Location Filters for members based on their last visited location. Multiple locations or location groups can be included. Individual members will only have one last visited location. Disabled locations are still included in segmentation.
Note: When you select attribute value = ANY, it filters for all members who have at least a single visit. Segmentation for members with 0 visits is not allowed.
Zip Code Filters for members based on their address and zip code. You can specify single or multiple zip codes where the user can be. Zip codes should have a comma(,) separating them if the relational operator is 'in' or 'not in' (302000,302001) and an ellipsis(..) separating them if the relational operator is 'between' or 'not between' (302000..302029). Zip code data is only available if collected on the member profile. Punchh does not collect this information from online ordering providers.
Note: There is a limit of 20,000 zip codes in a single entry. You will be notified if your entry exceeds the limit.
Most Visited Location Filters for members who made at least two visits to a specific location. Multiple locations or location groups can be included. Individual members will only have one most visited location. This attribute can be used to identify members with loyalty towards a single location. Disabled locations are still included in segmentation.
Note: When you select attribute value = ANY, it filters for all members who have at least two visits in any single location. Segmentation for members with zero and one visit is not available.
Member Info
Email domain Filters for members based on their email address domains. E.g., if you want members with email addresses such as "xyz@gmail.com" specify the Email Domain as "gmail.com".
Member Type Filters for members based on their member type: eClub or Loyalty, Only eClub, or Loyalty.
Onboarding Date Filters members based on the date they joined Punchh. Joining Punchh can mean that the member was uploaded to eClub or signed up for a loyalty account. If a member joins via eClub and then migrates to a loyalty account, the loyalty date is then used for this segment.
Note: You can use this filter to pull ALL loyalty members by filtering for loyalty only. For other segments that pull loyalty members, see Program Join Date.
Member Info Filters for members based on whether the following information exists: Anniversary present?, Birthday present?, Favorite location present?, or Phone number present.
Activation Status Filters for members based on the following status: active, banned, deactivated.
Conversion Channel Filters for members who are members of the loyalty program, but became a member through another signup channel, like eClub.
Program Join Date Filters loyalty only members based on their join date only. This filter does not include eClub. It is important to note that this segment is first based on the creation date, so if you have eClub members who converted to loyalty, but their creation date as an eClub member is outside your selected range they will NOT be included in the segment. Additionally, if your brand had a previous loyalty program, prior to Punchh, this attribute will filter members based on the join date of the previous loyalty program, if these dates were provided during migration/implementation.
Note: To include eClub as well, and/or get ALL loyalty members within a time frame, see Onboarding Date.
Onboarding Channel Filters for members based on their specific onboarding channel. For example, eClub upload, Mobile, Email, POS, ApplePass, etc.
Note: The onboarding channel is the channel that initiated the creation of their member profile in the Punchh system, regardless of the member being part of eClub or Loyalty.
Other
Membership tier Filters for members based on their membership tier in your loyalty program. Tier selection is allowed based on current points, lifetime points, or none.
Note: Only valid for programs with a formal tiered structure.
Added Apple Pass to Wallet Filters for members who either have or have not added Apple Pass to their digital wallet. See Smart Passes: Overview for more details.
Added Google Pass to Wallet Filters for members who either have or have not added Google Pass to their digital wallet. See Smart Passes: Overview for more details.

To filter for members who are not migrated members of your previous loyalty program, you will need to create an eClub list to include in your segment and filter for "does not equal Migrated" within the same segment.
Member Activity Filters members based on whether they have activity or not in their loyalty account.
Note: The member activity includes more than loyalty checkins. To filter by a specific type of activity, we recommend using the "Checkins" segment type, rather than a Profile Details segment.

Note: Decimal values and values below 0 are not allowed and will not display as expected.

No Checkin In X Duration

This segment filters for members who have no checkins via their loyalty account over a specified period of time.
When you select a specific date range, the segment will NOT include people who have NEVER checked in. For a more holistic segment, it is recommended to combine this segment with "No Checkin No Redemption" (see below). However, when you use the duration “EVER” with the "No Checkin in X Duration" segment, it DOES capture the “No Checkin No Redemption” audience

No Checkin No Redemption

This segment filters for members who have no checkins or redemptions made via their loyalty account over a specified period of time.
Please be aware, that a member can have no checkins and still have redemptions on their loyalty account. It is possible for these members to fall into this segment. A member can have no checkins but have a forced redemption that was made via POS or platform configurations, etc.

Only Visited with Discount

This segment type is configured to filter for members who have at least one receipt containing one or more discounted menu items. This includes any type of discount found on a receipt: Military, Happy Hour, Promos, Coupons, or Redeemables etc.

For example, you could set up a campaign to send a one-time message of "You're over halfway there!" to every member whose total points fall between 51 and 60 (out of 100) and another to send a message of "You're almost there!" to members whose total points fall between 86 and 99.

You can add member emails manually or upload a CSV containing a list of members and emails to automatically populate your segment. Alternatively, you can add members using the current snapshot (frozen) of one of your segments to populate your custom list with the contents of that segment's member list. See How to Make a Custom List Segment End to End: From Best Practices to Troubleshooting.

External Segments

This segment type creates segments using predefined segments received from external third-party sources such as CDP vendors. Click the drop-down under External Segment List to choose from pre-defined segment lists. In order for members to fall into the segment, they will have to be a part of the pre-defined external segment.

External Segments can be combined with other segments to create a complex segment using AND, OR, NOT INCLUDING operators (Segments: Difference between AND, OR, NOT INCLUDING).

Punchh Segments

This segment configuration allows the combination of two or more user-created segments for a more refined segment. Use the drop-down under Segment List to search and choose from the existing segments. In order for members to fall into the Punchh segment, they will have to be a part of the selected segments from the list.

Punchh Segments can be combined with other segments using AND, OR, NOT INCLUDING operators (Segments: Difference between AND, OR, NOT INCLUDING).

Note: Using Punchh segments with a combination of other Punchh segments and operators can create a recursive segment. Creating recursive is restricted and recommended to validate the usage before creating one.

Smart Segments

This segment configuration allows the smart segment to be used in combination with user-created segments for a more refined segment. Use the drop-down under Smart Segment List to search and choose from the existing smart segment categories. Smart segment categories are rules based on a combination of member behavior. Check smart segment rules and categories here.

Smart Segments can be combined with other segments using AND, OR, NOT INCLUDING operators (Segments: Difference between AND, OR, NOT INCLUDING).

Note: Using Smart segments with a combination of other Smart segments and operators will create a recursive segment and generate abnormal segment counts. Creating a recursive segment is restricted and it is recommended to validate the usage before creating one.
