Referral Campaign

Use a Referral campaign to reward guests with gifts/punches/points for promoting your loyalty program by referring friends using their referrer code or by inviting their friends on Facebook. (Referral campaigns reward only the referring guest, i.e., the referrer.)

Referral Campaign Fraud Protection: A guest can refer another guest at any time, BUT to qualify for a referral campaign, the referred guest must checkin while the campaign is active. In other words, Guest A can refer Guest B prior to or during an active referral campaign. However, Guest A will only be rewarded if Guest B checks in with their referral code while the campaign is active. In order to avoid fraud, referrals are always dependent on the referred user checking in for the first time. We cannot automatically gift users just for entering an invite code and signing up; a checkin is always required. Additionally, as an extra layer of fraud protection, the referred guest must use a separate device from the one used by the guest who referred them. If Guest A refers Guest B, but Guest B logs into the same computer Guest A used, the referral code will not work.

Create a New Referral Campaign

Before setting up a new Referral campaign, you may first need to create a redeemable (if offering a gift redeemable). If gifting points, a redeemable isn't required. To create a new Referral campaign:

  1. Navigate to Marketing Automation > Campaign Management in your left-hand navigation toolbar.
  2. Click Create Campaign in the upper right corner.
  3. Click Automations.
  4. Select the Referral campaign type.
  5. Click Create.

Step 1 - What

Choose a name and action(s) for your campaign.

  1. Enter a name for your campaign in the Referral Campaign Name field.
  2. Click the Gift Type drop-down and choose what type of reward the guest will receive after a referral has been made. Depending on your choice, complete the following steps:

For Gift Redeemable

Choose a Redeemable Item to gift to someone who referred one of their friends (e.g., a free appetizer).

  • Click the Redeemable Reward drop-down and select the redeemable you want to associate with this offer.
A preview thumbnail for your redeemable will appear along with its title and description.

For Gift Points

  • Enter the amount of (additional) points to gift the guest in the Gift Points field.

For Gift Derived Rewards

  • Click the Derived Rewards drop-down to select the Derived Rewards you want to reward.

For Currency

Enter the dollar amount of currency to gift the guest in the Gift Currency field.

Next, you will be able to set the expiry of the currency. You have three options:

  • For Expiry (In Days), enter how many days after the guest receives the currency you want it to expire in the Expiry (In Days) field. For example, if you want the currency to expire one week after the guest earns it, you would enter the number 7.

If you want the currency to expire the same day, enter '1' for the Expiry (In Days) field, OR enter thesame date into the Explicit Date of Expiryfield. For example, if the campaign is set to deliver on 9/15/25 and you enter '1' into the Expiry (In Days) field, the currency would expire on 9/15/25 at 11:59 PM. The same is true if you had entered 9/15/25 in the Explicit Date field.

  • For Explicit Date of Expiry, click the field and use the calendar to select which day the currency will expire for all guests, regardless of when they earned it.
  • For Default Expiry, leave both the Expiry (In Days) and the Explicit Date of Expiry fields blank. This will result in the campaign using the business's default expiration strategy.

For Gift Collectible

You can also configure a combo gift — select both a redeemable and then a collectible to reward guests with both at the same time.

  • Click the Collectible drop-down and select the digital collectible you want to award to guests.
  • A preview of the selected collectible will appear.

Note: If a collectible fails to issue on a Referral campaign, the referral reward itself is not affected and the reward completes successfully regardless.

  1. In the Gift Reason field, add a short message describing the type/purpose of this gift-giving campaign (or leave it as the default "referral").
This message will appear in the guest's account history.
  2. Click Next to move on to Step 2.

Step 2 - Whom

Select certain details and messaging that will apply to your campaign.

Campaign Settings

Use the following two fields to prevent fraud by limiting the number of referral rewards a guest can receive in a set time frame. Both fields must be filled out to successfully create a limit. These fields are optional; if you do not wish to limit referral rewards, leave them blank or enter 0 in both fields.

  • Max referral reward per interval: Use this field to limit the number of referral rewards a guest can receive in a specific time period. For example, if you enter "2", a guest would only receive a referral reward 2 times in a specific time period.
  • Interval (days): Use this field to define the specific time period (in days) in which a guest can receive a referral reward(s). Using the example above, if you enter '2' as the max referral reward and you entered '30' as the interval, the guest would only be able to receive 2 referral rewards every 30 days.

Best Practice: If you configure a referral reward cap using the Max referral reward per interval and Interval (days) fields, activate the Referral Reward Limit Reached notification template in Loyalty Program > System Messages to automatically notify guests when they've reached their limit. The default message can be customized to match your brand's voice. See System Messages: General for details.

  • Survey(Added Module) - Use the drop-down to select one of your saved Surveys. This survey will trigger for a guest once they open the push notification message sent out with this campaign. The guest must complete the survey to receive their reward.

Messaging

Add messaging for each of the notification types you want to send. Refer to Campaign Message Options for full details.

Step 3 - When

Schedule your campaign.

Note: As stated above, a guest can refer another guest at any time, BUT to qualify for a referral campaign the referred guest must checkin while the campaign is active. In other words, Guest A can refer Guest B prior to or during an active referral campaign. However, Guest A will only be rewarded if Guest B checks in with their referral code while the campaign is active.

  1. Click the Start Date field to choose a date from the calendar for your campaign to begin.
  2. Click the End Date field to choose a date for your campaign to end.

Warning: If you do not choose an end date, your campaign will run indefinitely, and you will not be able to end it except by contacting the Punchh team to reset it.

  1. Once satisfied with your campaign settings, click Finish to save and schedule your new Referral campaign.
