Redemption Wait Period for Multiple Redemptions

Overview

The Redemption Wait Period for Multiple Redemptions gives your brand greater control over how frequently guests can redeem offers. When enabled, the Punchh Platform enforces a minimum time gap between consecutive basket-level redemptions, helping your brand reduce excessive redemption activity while maintaining a seamless guest experience.

This feature is part of Multiple Redemptions (Redemptions 2.0) and applies to both loyalty and non-loyalty guests.

Note: This feature requires enablement by your Punchh team. To enable the Redemption Wait Period for Multiple Redemptions and configure your basket limits and wait duration, contact your Punchh representative.

How It Works

When this feature is enabled for your brand, the Punchh Platform tracks how many baskets a guest has redeemed within a configured time window. Once a guest reaches the configured basket limit, the system blocks additional redemptions until the wait period has elapsed.

Key behaviors to understand:

  • Basket-level restriction: The limit applies to the number of baskets redeemed — not the number of individual offers. All offers within a single basket count as one redemption event.
  • Applies to all guests: The wait period applies to both loyalty and non-loyalty guests.
  • Backward compatible: This feature does not affect existing redemption behavior unless it has been explicitly enabled for your brand.

When a guest attempts to redeem after reaching the basket limit, they receive the following message: "Redemption is not allowed right now. Please wait before creating another redemption."

Configuration

When your Punchh representative enables this feature, they configure the following values for your brand:

Field Description Accepted Values
Basket The maximum number of baskets a guest can redeem within the defined time window. 1–100
Hours The number of hours in the wait period time window. If left empty, defaults to 4 hours. Any whole number
Minutes The number of minutes to add to the wait period. If left empty, defaults to 0 minutes. 0–59

Default Behavior

The system applies safe defaults whenever a field is left empty.  An empty or nil value in the Hours field always defaults to 4 hours. An empty or nil value in the Minutes field always defaults to 0 minutes. If both fields are left empty, the wait period defaults to 4 hours 0 minutes.Use the examples below to understand how the Hours and Minutes fields interact:

Hours Value Minutes Value Resulting Wait Period
Empty 15 4 hours 15 minutes
0 15 15 minutes
Empty Empty 4 hours 0 minutes

Use Case

Limiting basket-level redemptions within a set time window

Your brand wants to prevent guests from redeeming offers across multiple transactions in rapid succession. You have the Redemption Wait Period for Multiple Redemptions configured with a limit of 2 baskets within a 4-hour window.

  • A loyalty member visits your restaurant at lunch and redeems two offers on the same transaction — one for $2 off their entrée and one for a free side. Because both offers are applied in the same basket, the system counts this as one redemption event.
  • The guest returns later in the afternoon and redeems a second basket of offers. This counts as their second redemption within the 4-hour window.
  • If the guest attempts to redeem again before the 4-hour window expires, the system blocks the redemption and the guest sees: "Redemption is not allowed right now. Please wait before creating another redemption." Once the time window resets, the guest can redeem offers again as normal.

Tip: The basket limit and wait duration are configured to match your brand's needs. Contact your Punchh representative to discuss the right settings for your redemption strategy.
