Barcode Types and Functions
Barcode Symbology:
Global Standards One (GS1). As the name suggests, the organization can be considered primarily as the standards organization managing the assignment of various numbering schemes upon which global commerce has come to rely.
There are two basic bar codes:
Single Line Bar Code: holds information nicely in the horizontal direction:

QR: Referred to as two-dimensional, because they carry information both vertically and horizontally.

UPC (Universal Product Codes)
EAN (European Article Numbers also called International Article Numbers

| UPCA | Universal Product Code. ... UPC (technically refers to UPC-A) consists of 12 numeric digits, that are uniquely assigned to each trade item. Along with the related EAN barcode, the UPC is the barcode mainly used for scanning of trade items at the point of sale, per GS1 specifications. |

| UCC 128 | The UCC-128 (GS1-128) label is a critical piece of the EDI puzzle. The labels can be applied to both pallet shipments and individual cartons. | EAN-13 | The European Article Numbering System (EAN) is a superset of U.P.C. EAN-13 consists of 13 numbers. |
| EAN-8 | The European Article Numbering System (EAN) is a superset of U.P.C. EAN-8 and consists of 8 digits for small packages. |
| Interleaved 2 of 5 | Interleaved 2 of 5 (ITF) is a numeric-only barcode used for encoding pairs of numbers in a high-density barcode format like code 128-character set C. |
