Order Limits

Overview

Order limits let you set a minimum and/or maximum subtotal for each order type at each store. When a limit is configured and a guest's cart does not meet it, the order is blocked, the guest cannot complete checkout until the cart subtotal is within range.

Common use cases:

  • Set a maximum at high-fraud locations to help prevent large fraudulent chargebacks.
  • Set a maximum at understaffed stores during peak hours to help prevent kitchen overload.
  • Set a minimum for a specific order type, for example, dine-in orders must be at least $10.

Order Limits Functions

Limits are configured per order type, per store. Each order type can have an independent minimum and maximum.

Setting Behavior
Minimum order amount The subtotal must be at or above this value to place the order.
Maximum order amount The subtotal must be at or below this value to place the order.
Field left empty No limit applies for that direction.

Amount basis: The subtotal is the sum of item prices only, before taxes, fees, and discounts are applied. This keeps limits predictable for both you and your guests, regardless of jurisdiction or applied promotions.

Enforcement: Limits are checked when the guest places the order. If the cart does not meet the configured limits, the order is rejected and the guest sees an error message.

Both limits must pass independently: If a store has both a minimum and a maximum set, the order subtotal must satisfy both.

Order Limits vs Delivery Area Minimums

Order limits are separate from the existing delivery area minimum. Both apply independently on delivery and catering delivery orders.

How order limits differ from delivery area minimums

Feature Configure Location Applies to Compared Against
Delivery area minimum Delivery area or zone Delivery, catering delivery, catering pickup Subtotal minus discounts (delivery) or subtotal (catering)
Order type limit (min/max) Order type settings Any order type with limits configured Subtotal before discounts

If a delivery order has both configured, both must pass. For example, a $150 cart that clears the order type minimum ($100), but falls below the zone's area minimum ($200) is still blocked and the reverse is also true.

Order Limits in Management Center

Navigate to Stores > [select a store] > Configurations > Order Types > [select an order type] > General tab

The Minimum order amount and Maximum order amount fields appear below the tip settings, grouped with other general order constraints. They appear for all order types such as pickup, delivery, dine-in, catering, and so on.

Configure Order Limits

  1. In Management Center, go to Stores > [store name] > Configurations > Order Types.
  2. Select the order type you want to configure (for example, Pickup or Delivery).
  3. On the General tab, scroll to Minimum order amount and/or Maximum order amount.
  4. Enter a whole-dollar value (for example, "10" for $10.00). Leave the field empty to apply no limit for that direction.
  5. If you set both values, the maximum must be greater than the minimum. Otherwise, the field shows an inline validation error.
  6. Save your changes.

To remove a limit you previously set, clear the field and save.

Brand-level Defaults

When a new store is added for a brand, it inherits the brand's order type template values for minimum and maximum order amounts. You can override these at the store level at any time using the steps above.

Troubleshooting

Scenario Expected behavior
Field left empty No limit applies in that direction.
Maximum set lower than or equal to the minimum An inline validation error is shown, and saving is blocked until you correct it.
Subtotal below the minimum at order placement The order is blocked with the message "Order subtotal below minimum."
Subtotal above the maximum at order placement The order is blocked with the message "Order subtotal exceeds maximum."
Fields are read-only in Management Center The order type is managed at the brand level. Contact your brand admin to adjust the template values.
You do not have permission to edit order limits Your Management Center role is missing the order limits write permission. Ask your account admin to update your role.
